Collection: The Tuareg + Berber Collection

The Tuareg are North & West African Berber people typically inhabiting the Sahara Desert including Algeria, Mali, Libya, Niger and Burkina Faso and as far south as Northern Nigeria.  Of the Tuareg people, the greatest majority live in Niger. They are traditionally nomadic pastoralists and are skilled craftsmen, producing exquisite jewelry. The Tuareg are known for their craftsmanship in jewelry, especially silver. Traditionally, Tuareg silver is an alloy, comprised of silver and other metals like brass or bronze.

Although Islam is practiced by the Tuareg, they retain much of their indigenous culture; descent and inheritance come from the maternal line. You may be familiar with the bright blue color often adorned and the covered faces. An interesting custom is the Tam Tam Dance, where men on camel circle the women while they play drums and chat.
