Cowry shells were traditionally used in African trade as currency or barter and today still hold a special place in culture and spirituality. They also represent fertility and are used as a protection against the evil eye. In Kenya, earrings made from materials in nature go back to the earliest of time. Kenya is in the Nile Valley, which extends from Uganda and Tanzania, up through Ethiopia and up to Egypt, all of which are early civilizations.
From ancient times, man has used natural materials to reflect nature and life. As such, Kenyan jewelry often features bone. Brass, along with other metals, have long been used throughout the Continent of Africa in jewelry, tool making and every day life. When you wear these earrings, you are wearing symbols of the origin of civilization as well as ancestral traditions.
Length varies, approximately 3 - 3.5" from hook.
