Collection: The Maasai Collection

The Maasai people chiefly inhabit the areas between Southern Kenya and Northern Tanzania. The colors in Maasai jewelry and clothing have meaning. The shuka is a traditional robe, which is predominantly red.  A woman's status and position are often reflected in the beadwork she wears, which is modern times is shown in detailed beadwork and color patterns. This is especially true with the wearing of the beaded collar.

Red symbolizes warriorhood, bravery, courage and strength. It is also believed that red scares away predators from long distances and it also represents the unity of the Maasai people, who are collective and gather for slaughters or celebration.  White is the color of cow's milk, so it also represents vitality and purity.

As in other African traditions, themes of life are heavily reflected in clothing, jewelry, dance, art and other aspects of culture.  Green is the color of the grasses that feed cattle and therefore symbolizes health and well-being. Blue is the color of the sky, from which rain comes.  Orange represents friendship and generosity while yellow represents the color of the sun. Black symbolizes the people and the hardships they must endure.
